Making daddy proud: presentations of femininity in video games with female protagonists

Despite the male dominated landscape of the video game industry, several games featuring female protagonists have garnered wide-spread recognition and acclaim among players of all genders. Existing video game literature suggests that women are underrepresented and hypersexualized across the medium. However, research on this topic faces the challenge of fast- paced, changing trends in the video game industry. Utilizing qualitative content analysis, this research analyzes the construction of femininity in video games with female protagonists from the most recent gaming console generation. By analyzing game narrative and character development, this study offers a critical look at how gender norms are reproduced through video games. Coding analysis revealed the centering of male protectors, lack of sexual agency, character development through suffering, and gendered expectations of morality. Overall, while many of the findings in this study mark a departure from the hypersexualized female characters from previous studies, the male gaze still manifests in these games through the paternal need to protect female characters. Making games on small devices is great fun and also a great way to learn. You don’t have to worry about breaking anything, and the games tend to be much simpler than on the big computers. And with CircuitPython you don’t need to install anything on your computer, all you need is a text editor. But it’s not easy to decide what you need exactly: what hardware to get, which libraries to use and how to actually put it all together to spend the minimum time on all that, and maximum time on the game itself? This video reviews the available options, their pros and cons, and shows some examples to get you started. Published by EuroPython. Mechanisms of soil organic carbon sequestration and implications for management

Organic carbon sequestration is delineated from the different mechanisms underlying the storage of organic matter in mineral soils. The scene is set with definitions of the major terms within the complex of organic matter formation in soils, followed by describing the types of organic matter entering the soil and the major processes during turnover and the protective mechanisms leading to organic matter storage in soils. Detritusphere and rhizosphere are identified as soil compartments with high and specific organic matter input. From the process complex of OM degradation and binding, the potential of different soils for sequestering organic carbon is delineated and its limitations discussed with regard to the possibility of C saturation of mineral soils. In the light of these considerations, soil management options are deduced either by increasing organic carbon inputs to the soil by improved land use/management practices or by decreasing organic carbon outputs. The paper discusses about projects tested in three different scenarios, urban design, architecture, and product design. It concludes with the arguments on designers’ role as authors of the system design. Chapter from Augmented Reality and its Application.

Fashion, history, museums: inventing the display of dress

The last decade has seen the growing popularity and visibility of fashion as a cultural product, including its growing presence in museum exhibitions. This book explores the history of fashion curating and exhibitions, highlighting the continuity of past and present curatorial practices. Comparing and contrasting exhibitions from different museums and decades – from the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 to the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011 – it makes connections between museum fashion and the wider fashion industry. By critically analyzing trends in fashion exhibition practice over the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Julia Petrov defines and describes the varied representations of historical fashion within British and North American museum exhibitions.

Motivation in organisations: searching for a meaningful work-life balance

Motivation in Organisations: Searching for a Meaningful Work-Life Balance extends the current motivation models in business education to include motives of human behaviour that have been neglected for decades. It debunks some of the myths about human motivation (self-interest as the dominant factor, amorality and non-spirituality) and explains why this approach to teaching business is erroneous and leads to wrong and harmful practices in many organisations. In a very personal and engaging style, the author presents a “map of motivations”, based on a humanistic approach to management. Published by Manuel Guillén, from the University of Valencia, Spain

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on human rights

Europe is characterised by developed liberal democracies that put a strong emphasis on the protection of human rights. Since the 1950’s, no major political or economic event has put in question the commitment of the European Union or the Member States to upholding the rule of law and to protecting fundamental human rights. The COVID-19 pandemic presented the first major challenge to these commitments. Despite the existing network of rules protecting human rights, it is undisputed that this network has been undermined by the governmental actions taken in response to the pandemic. This publication is the result of a coordinated research effort by Frederick University academic staff to identify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human rights through doctrinal, comparative, multidisciplinary and empirical research. In particular, the book addresses the following issues: the pandemic as a major challenge for women’s working life in the EU; digital transformation in the COVID-19 era; privacy vs public health in the case of COVID-19 tracing apps; effects of the pandemic crisis on general population mental health; employee rights during pandemic in social sciences; the impact of the pandemic on shipping; how criminal law helps to tackle the pandemic; corruption risks in public procurement in the context of COVID-19; and the continuous mutation of the raised issues among pandemic, law and the state.

Teachers as learners: exploring the impact of accredited professional development on learning and assessment in Irish higher education

The works presented in this volume exemplify the practice of assessment explored through accredited professional development (APD) across Ireland and the impact this has had on individual lecturers, students, modules and programmes. Taking part in an accredited programme and completing the associated assessment engages lecturers in practical strategies for change. The second impact of assessment is the impact of the experience of assessment – the experiential learning about assessment that lecturers do as part of the accredited APD – has on their work as lecturers. Lecturers assess differently having considered assessment in theory and having experienced it in practice. The experience gives lecturers the language to engage in professional dialogue about assessment with themselves, their programme teams and most importantly the students. Published by AISHE. Improved learning outcomes and teacher experience: a qualitative study of team-based learning in secondary schools

Based on the benefits of team-based learning (TBL) in higher education, our project investigated possible benefits of TBL in secondary education. We found that, despite challenges, the benefits of using TBL in secondary schools make it worth teachers’ time and effort. We conducted a year-long qualitative study with 13 teachers from Ireland, Spain and UK. While teachers found preparation time, institutional requirements, and managing student team dynamics challenging, challenges were outweighed by benefits including improved student engagement, quality of learning, skill development, and teacher job satisfaction. We recommend further TBL training for secondary-level teachers and further research into this topic. Published in Social Sciences and Humanities Open Journal.
