In February of 2014 - in the buildup to the referendum on marriage equality, and a short time after discussing the matter candidly on an RTÉ talkshow - Ireland's leading drag performer, Panti Bliss, delivered this speech at the Abbey Theatre. The theatre's production of The Risen People would end every performance with a Noble Call, where an invited guest could address the audience on a topic of their choice. Panti delivered the final of these speeches, vividly laying out the experience of being gay even in a "respectable" society like modern Ireland. The result soon went viral, and became one of the most memorable moments of a long campaign.
