Law and Legal Studies: Case Law

Law Reports and Judgements

Law Reports are published records of judicial decisions / judgements on significant legal issues.

The main types of Law Reports include:

- Full-text law reports which incorporate the full judgement given by the court, the headnote which is a summary of the case and a number of other sections..

- Summary reports, also known as digests, case summaries, case notes etc which contain a summary or abridgement of the judgement.

To find a particular Law Report it is useful to have the report citation:

Example:

Smith v. Director of Public Prosecutions

[2014] IESC 34, [S.C. No. 6 of 2014]

The citation typically contains the following information:

- Names of the parties involved

- Year of publication

- Abbreviation for the law report

- Page number

- Abbreviation for the court

A collection of Law Reports are available in SETU Carlow libraries in both print and electronic version.

The print collections are located in the Law Reference section on the ground floor (Stacks 17-19) of the SETU Carlow Campus library.
